The greatest political treachery of our democratic dispensation is not the mass defection of APC National Assembly members to the opposition PDP, rather it is the fact that the National Assembly itself is now the greatest stumbling block to the 2019 general elections.
President Buhari recently wrote the leadership of the National Assembly seeking its approval for the sum of N242.4 billion to be drawn from 2018 and 2019 budgets for purpose of funding 2019 general elections coming up in February next year.
Now, the Senate has adjourned plenary for two months without even tabling Mr. President’s request. The Senate is resuming plenary in September this year.
Given the usual intrigues defined by the usual negative attitude of the Senate to Presidential requests, I fear that the time between September 2018 and February 2019 is too short a time to consider Mr. President’s request and for funds to be released to INEC for preparation for the elections.
I fear INEC may not be ready and there might be requests for postponement of the election. And Buhari would be blamed.
