A Senate of Infamy

These Bills have been lying before the Senate of Federal Republic of Nigeria:

1. 2017 Budget …. since December 2016

2. Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB)……..since eternity

3. Two Bills to strengthen the anti-corruption war….since 2015

What have the senators done about these important bills?

Nothing.

What have they done? They are discussing:

1. Comptroller General of Customs’ Uniform….

2. Senate President Bukola Saraki’s SUV….

3. How to grant waiver to a Senator’s friend’s imported rice disguised as yeast so as to evade import duty

4. Dino Melaye and his ceremonial academic robe he worn to plenary

5. How to summon Prof Itse Sagay to explain why he called them immature and unserious people

6. How to suspend Senator Ali Ndume for “not doing due diligence” before urging the Senate investigate newspaper allegation against Dino Melaye and Senate President Bukola Saraki

7. How to support Bukola Saraki to shut down the Federal Government as a way maintaining legislative independence

Ours must be the worst Senate in the whole wide world

Unfortunately, we the people – the ultimate losers – are taking sides to support and applaud them based on our usual fault lines of

Ethnicity

Religion

Party affiliations

Crumbs

We never care about the country. Or tomorrow. Or the future of our children.

But it is okay.

We want the country to work but we don’t want to work. Or make it work.
