PDP – THE WAY FORWARD

PDP is distracting itself asking PMB to probe campaign funds of APC. It will never happen. No government anywhere in the world probes itself – even in the so-called advanced democracies.
So instead of fixating itself with what will never happen, PDP had better face up to reality and think of how to grab power in 2019 or 2023. If it grabs power in 2019 or 2023, it can probe PMB and whoever it wants to probe.
Right now the party is more of its own problem. When it decided in its wisdom to make Ali Modu Sheriff its chairman some of us saw the calamity that was coming. This was the same Sheriff they accused in the past of financing Boko Haram.
Now the party is factionalized. At the rate things are going in PDP there may be nobody left in that party to contest election in 2019.
But the party can still redeem itself if, and only if, it does the following:
- Admit that it did not leave up to expectation for the 16 years it was in power, and apologise to Nigerians in that regard
- Rebrand itself. Change its name from PDP to any other name it might choose since the name “PDP” is now more of a baggage of liabilities than assets
- Seek out the fringe parties in our polity – Kowa, SDP, Labour, APGA etc and merge with them.
- Seek out some of the aggrieved founding fathers of the party whom President Jonathan side-lined – Dr. Alex Ekwueme & Co – make amends with them and seek their blessings.
- Pay less attention to the person of Buhari and more attention to the policies of the government and bring forward alternative course of action for each policy
- Suspend from the party all those so far mentioned, (and any other person subsequently mentioned) in the $2.1 billion arms purchase scandal
If the PDP can do these, I’m sure it will begin to regain the confidence of Nigerians. Continuing with the way it is currently doing will not lead it anywhere. On the contrary, it will lead it to extinction.
