Forget Kamala, let’s talk Biden – by Frank Ofili

Forget Kamala Harris. She is not going anywhere. As much as I personally would welcome a woman-in-the-White House proposition, Americans themselves are not ready to hand their country to a woman yet. They don’t see themselves in the mold of the UK or Germany. At least not yet

So, let’s talk Joe Biden.

If Biden emerges Democratic presidential flag bearer, I doubt even he would defeat Trump in the US Presidential election.

This is because Trump is giving Americans what they want at the moment – a tough stance on immigration and a booming economy.

The snag for Trump though is that he is not quite fully able to square up to Russian’s Putin. The reason is obvious; and Americans are touchy about Russia.

This may work in favour of Biden. Plus, if he deploys a bit of charisma and is able to line up the Obamas and the Clintons behind his candidacy.

With the UK – Uncle Sam’s strongest ally – going extreme right, like today America itself, Biden has his work cut out for him. It is going to be tough.

The magic for Biden may lie in the Persian Gulf. If by some chance, Iran successfully blockades the Strait of Hormuz even for one day (an unlikely possibility, which Americans would consider an afront if it happens), then world oil supply would fall short, thus pushing up price, making Americans pay more. That is one prospect even Trump cannot survive
