Shut up, Trump – by Frank Ofili

Trump’s America, itself intolerant of popular will and racial differences, is accusing Nigeria, a country with Muslim president and Christian vice president, of religious intolerance.

And just before some home-grown Trumpists come here to ask me for proof, come with me let’s check out these:

Trump’s America tried to block Femi Akinwunmi from being re-elected as President of African Development Bank. Thankfully, Africans and other voting bloc insisted on their vote and Akinwunmi returned re-elected.

Trump’s America is also currently blocking our Dr. (Mrs) Ngozi-Okonjo Iweala from becoming head of WTO. This is even as the Amazon polled far more votes than her South Korean rival Yoo Myung-hee

And of course, we all know about Trump’s ongoing rants and disposition towards his country’s recent election – an election that saw him defeated as incumbent president. Trump wants the election result overturned, against the popular will of Americans!

As for being intolerant of racial differences, #blacklivesmatter global campaign and what led to it are instructive. As instructive as Trump’s failed bid to erect a physical wall, in the 21st Century, between America and Mexico. A wall at a time the whole world is preaching openness and inclusiveness! A wall, years after even the most notorious one, the Berlin Wall, was pulled down for its affront to the sensibilities of humanity and the global march towards open society.

Let me leave out Trump’s “shit hole countries” comment for now, but it is actually annoying that Trump would accuse Nigeria – a secular country, religion-wise, with balanced Muslim-Christian-traditional faith – of religious intolerance.

Of course, we had, still do have sometimes, minor skirmishes between Muslim and Christian adherents, but overall, nothing on ground remotely suggests a country with government and people intolerant of other religions. There is no official policy compelling adherence to a certain religion. Nor is anyone debarred from practicing their religious belief.

Donald Trump and his lapdog secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, should shut up.
