Job, Work, Profession, Career and Job obsolesce
754 viewsI often hear these words used interchangeably. All I can say is that there is a significant differences amongst them. Let’s try to identify those differences. Now let’s go.
A JOB is a regular activity performed in exchange for payment. A person usually begins a job by becoming an employee, volunteering, or starting a business. The duration of a job may range from an hour (in the case of odd jobs) to a lifetime (in the case of some judges).
The activity that requires a person’s mental or physical effort is WORK (as in “a day’s work”).
If a person is trained for a certain type of job, they may have a PROFESSION.
The series of jobs a person holds in their life is their CAREER.
Now, why are some jobs becoming obsolete?
There have been arguments as to whether traditional jobs are becoming obsolete in contemporary world economy. These arguments stem from increased multiplicity of income-generating sources in today’s world coupled with rapid changes in contemporary organizations.
In truth, jobs may be becoming obsolete for several reasons, among which are:
- Increasing role of modern technology in workplaces of which robots and computer programs are rapidly performing activities hitherto performed by humans. These robots and computer programs are more accurate, efficient, effective and cheaper than human labour.
- Increase in e-payment system by which traditional ways of value exchange can now be done through smart cards and internet
- Increase in modern information communication technology in which gadgets are paying increasing roles in replacing traditional means/ways of communication
- Jobs are also becoming obsolete in today’s world due to increasing cost of keeping humans at work
- The emergence of virtual work system has also contributed to jobs becoming obsolete. Due to technology, people can now work in remote places through computer systems without having to go to a particular placed called an office
