Growing slowly but surely under Buhari – by Goffy Ugeh

We have just most recently celebrated two land mark events that speak volumes for our growing democracy. However, most intelligent celebrants appear not to want to acknowledge and applaud the fact that our country is slowly but surely allowing established government institutions to perform their functions without the kind of arm twisting and interference we used to have.
The first signal to this new dawn was the PDP victory at the just concluded Osun Senatorial elections. If such an election had happened at an earlier era, intimidatory government machinery would have been unleashed on Osun electorate to hound them into voting for the center. Witness however the departure from the past and how quietly INEC was allowed to perform, and the people given the freedom to choose a candidate of their choice. It is instructive that the government of the day did not see and use that election as a test run for the upcoming Osun governorship elections.
The second pointer to our sure institutional growth is the decision by the Supreme Court in favour of the Makarfi faction of the PDP. It is now being celebrated, but not as institutional growth victory and kudos for those making it happen.
The point being made here is that if in two short years the Buhari /Osinbajo administration has achieved the near impossible feat of allowing government institutions to perform to excellence then Nigeria’s future under their care is assuredly bright.
