In countries where things work the mere fact that a public office holder is involved in corruption scandal, whether guilty or not, he steps down from his position, submits himself to investigation and prosecution and defends himself in order to clear his name.
It is not so much about whether he is guilty or not. It is about integrity, about a moral obligation. Above all, it is about the sanctity of the office he occupies which must be separated from the person occupying it.
Saraki resigning as senate president does not automatically mean he is guilty. But his remaining on the seat while going through trial for breaking the law of the land, places a moral burden on the National Assembly and raises profoundly disturbing question about our political and moral health.
The chief law maker of any country should not be going through trial for breaking the law of the land. It is an aberration.
