Beyond the Head-teacher’s suspension31 views
I have just heard with one ear that Delta State Government has suspended the head teacher of Okotie Eboh Primary School, Sapele – little girl Success’s school.
Success was evicted from her class last Friday for failure to pay N900 illegal fee demanded of her by the school authority. The video of the little girl going home furious, unhappy, and even expressing her preference to be flogged instead of being sent out of the class, has since gone viral
I applaud the suspension of the head teacher for charging illegal fees. But beyond that, I opine that this matter should not just end with the suspension of the head teacher. Governor Okowa himself should be summoned by Delta State House of Assembly to come and explain why the school should be left in such deplorable condition (as shown in this picture) in spite of huge budget on education.
After that, the Governor should sack the Commissioner for Education for lack of performance.
I mean, there ought to be performance benchmarks and KPIs for public office holders, and periodic appraisal in line with those KPIs and anyone not delivering should be shown the exit door, including even the Governor himself.
The head teacher should not just be made scapegoat and everything returns to the usual abnormal normal.
Let me also add that the current deplorable condition of Okotie Eboh Primary School is replicated all over Delta State. The condition of the primary school I attended many years ago – Ngegwu Primary School, Ngegwu, Illah – is even worse than that of Okotie Eboh Primary School.
So, the State Ministry of Education should under-take a comprehensive audit of all primary and secondary schools in the state with a view to ascertaining those that need urgent upgrade.
